Next City Vanguards to Converge on Newcastle, Australia

Next City announces the selection of 50 outstanding urban leaders from around the world to participate in Vanguard Australia, the world’s premier urbanist leadership program. The convening will start on November 6, 2017, in Newcastle, Australia. It will be the first Vanguard conference held outside of North America.

Vanguard is Next City’s flagship gathering of the best and brightest rising local leaders working to improve cities across sectors, including urban planning, community development, entrepreneurship, government, transportation, sustainability, design, art and media.

The program launched in 2009 by Next City, a nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire social, economic and environmental change in cities through journalism and events around the world. Each year, it selects applicants whose smart ideas for cities, experience in the field and ambition for the future all show great promise.

The 2017 Vanguard Australia cohort includes changemakers from Fortune 500 companies, philanthropy, academia, the tech sector and all levels of government, including the mayoral offices and municipal agencies of major cities including Auckland, New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, Christchurch and Newcastle, our host city. It includes policymakers, politicians, architects, urban planners, artists, technologists, entrepreneurs and advocates, all selected through a competitive application process that drew hundreds of qualified applicants. The cohort includes 24 people from Australia and New Zealand and 28 people from North America, Asia and Europe.

“Promising innovators from around the world sought the opportunity to share knowledge and insights on the future of cities,” says Next City President Tom Dallessio. “Next City is thrilled to welcome the 2017 Vanguards, and we look forward to gathering in Newcastle to empower the next generation of urban leaders.”

“UrbanGrowth NSW and the Newcastle Host Committee are very impressed with the caliber of candidates from across Australia, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and Britain,” said UrbanGrowth NSW Acting Chief Executive Barry Mann. “Vanguard Australia will be at the forefront of new city thinking and we look forward to hearing from some of the best and brightest young minds in this field.
