Michael Ford on the Hip Hop Architecture Camp

January 23, 2019

The Hip Hop Architecture Camp is an award-winning international program that challenges youth to explore the cultural implications of architecture in the built environment through the lens of hip hop culture. Participants explore hip hop as a revolutionary approach to understanding, conceiving and generating architecture for their communities.

“If challenged to list more than six African-American architects or designers, could you do it? Of those you can name, how many of them changed the practice of architecture or shaped a community with a revolutionary approach? If Michael Ford isn’t on your list of black designers changing our industry, keep reading,” wrote Architect Magazine.

This webinar will highlight the works produced by previous camp participants, highlight upcoming programs, and provide details on how to get involved.

Michael Ford, Assoc. AIA, is known as the Hip Hop Architect as he explores architecture and urban planning through the lens of hip hop culture. Ford's work has been featured in a variety of places including the Oprah Winfrey Network, the TODAY Show, Rolling Stone Magazine, ESPN's The Undefeated, and Vibe Magazine. Ford is also a highly regarded speaker with keynotes at the American Institute of Architects National Conference, South by Southwest Eco Conference, and a TEDx presentation titled “Hip Hop Architecture as Modernism's Post Occupancy Evaluation.”
